Udaipur is a picturesque town located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It’s situated on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River. The town is renowned for the ancient Marikula Mata Temple, which is visited by both Hindus and Buddhist pilgrims.
The place was originally known as Markul because the temple is dedicated to Markula Devi, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. However, it was renamed to Udaipur in 1695 AD in honor of King Udai Singh of Chamba.
Udaipur offers thick forested and green landscapes that attract a lot of tourists and pilgrims to its unique temples, namely, Trilokinath and Markula Devi temples. The Marikula Mata Temple, along with the Trilokinath temple, form the two important pilgrimages in Lahaul and Spiti districts. Both of these temples have been constructed in Tibetan and Hindu styles of architecture with wood and stone.
For travelers who love trekking, Udaipur is also popular as a camping site. The greenery and breathtaking vistas are unlike other hill stations and promises a spectacular journey through the barren landscapes, green and soothing valleys.
The town can be reached by road and is about 33 KMs from Manali on the Manali-Leh Highway. The valley starts from the northern end of the Atal Tunnel, which is essentially a bridge between Manali and Lahaul.
I hope this provides a comprehensive understanding of Udaipur in Lahaul.
